During the first week of September 2009, an International Symposium on Solar Energy from Space was held at the Ontario Science Center in Toronto, Canada. The Symposium, which was jointly organized by Space Canada and the International Academy of Astronautics, provided a forum for the discussion of systems concepts, technology challenges and policy/economic factors in the realization of space solar power. During the event, a first-of-a-kind demonstration of wireless power transmission (WPT) was accomplished by John C. Mankins of Managed Energy Technologies and Prof. Nobuyuki Kaya of Kobe University, with the support of a team from Kobe University. The WPT demonstration established the use of state-of-the-art solid state amplifiers in a retro-directive phased array system that beamed power with high efficiency across the Great Hall at the Science Center.
John Mankins was recently interviewed on BBC Radio regarding his research in the field of Wireless Power Transmission. |
